In 1976, vocalist/guitarist Adrian Borland, bassist Bob Lawrence, and drummer Adrian Janes formed the Outsiders, one of the original British punk bands. Fittingly named, even by punk's by-the-numbers standards, the trio were often sniffed upon by the remainder of the scene for having longer hair and more formal education in their backgrounds. With financial help from Borland's supportive parents, the band pressed 1000 copies of their debut Calling on Youth and released it in June of 1977 through their own Raw Edge label.
